Speed Control of Switched Reluctance Motor (SRM)

Switched Reluctance Motor is a rotating electric machine where both stator and rotor have salient poles. Switched Reluctance Motor (SRM) drives are gaining attention due to their extremely rugged construction and fault-tolerant capabilities, which prove that SRM drives, are highly suitable for variety of industrial applications. In this paper, FPGA based digital controllers are designed for a 6/4 pole SRM drive. A digital controller can provide accurate speed control over a wide range of speeds and can also perform accurately at different operating conditions. Digital P, PI and PID controllers are designed and implemented to achieve the optimum performance of SRM in the presence of parameter variations and load disturbances using a high-speed flexible FPGA processor. The Proportional – Integral – Derivative (PID) controller operates the majority of the control system because of its simplicity, clear functionality and applicability. The simulation result shows that FPGA based PID has better control performance as compare to other digital controller for SRM.
